Six people, including three nine-year-old children, were killed at a school in Nashville, Tennessee, on Monday, by a former student of the school. There have been 15 mass shootings in US schools since 1999, killing 175 people, according to a database compiled by The Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University. The actual number could be higher, as ‘mass shootings’ in this database are defined as more than four people dying, not including the perpetrator.
US President Joe Biden has long called for stricter gun control, and his term has seen landmark legislation and some executive action to control mass shootings. However, legislative action is hobbled by Republicans who oppose any curbing of the right to bear firearms, even as gun violence becomes more frequent in the country.
